Last post, I talked a little about on-site SEO and how blog posts help with it…
So today I thought I’d talk a little about Title Tags and Meta Tags…
These are what show up when you do a search on Google, Yahoo, or Bing… and they help you entice searchers to click on your site!
Let’s start with Title Tags…
This is what shows up as a hyperlink in search results and it can and will impact whether people click or not.
Here are some rules of thumb when entering title tags…
- Put keywords in it
- Don’t spam, use relevant keywords!
- Use 65 characters or less (this is a Google limitation)
- Keep them less than 7 words
- Consider branding (like “keyword | www.yourwebsite.com”)
- Remember that humans read these!
- Use some copy writing to “sell the click”
- Avoid ALL CAPS
- Use ‘‐’, ‘|’, and ‘&’ to keep it short
Now for Meta Tags…
These encompass “Meta Keywords” and “Meta Descriptions.”
Meta Keywords attempt to tell the search engines what keywords your site is relevant for and Meta Descriptions are what the search engines display in the search results.
Meta Keywords…
- Are pretty much ignored by Google now due to people spamming their keywords (still some search engines use them, including Yahoo and Bing)
- Your competition loves to steal your keywords, so be careful using them
Here are some guidelines for using Meta Keywords…
- Don’t spam them
- Use a nice spread of related keywords
- Don’t use your “money keywords”
- You don’t need commas except for aesthetic reasons
- Use no more than a dozen keywords
Meta Description…
- Gets indexed (and used) by the search engines
- Entices users to click your link and visit your website
- Helps separate your site from the competition
- If you don’t have one, search engines will use the first thing on your page as the description
Here are some guidelines for using Meta Descriptions…
- “Sprinkle” some keywords in there
- Use some copywriting to get people to click
- Use 160 characters or less (the rest usually gets cut off anyway)
- Don’t use ALL CAPS
In WordPress, it’s really easy to add Title Tags and Meta Tags…
You can use the “All-in-One SEO Pack,” for example…
Or your theme might have it in the post editor. (I use the “Genesis” framework, which does.)
